6' Ship's Wheel USS Massachusetts Ca.1891

Offered is a piece of maritime history, the ship's wheel from the Battleship USS Massachusetts. Built between 1891 and 1897, she saw action during the blockade of Cuba in 1898. The Massachusetts was decommissioned in 1919 and sunk off the coast of Florida for use as a bombing target. After decommissioning, the wheel was given to the family of Hiram H. Parke of Parke-Benet Auction Galleries. It was then electrified and hung at his country retreat in Pike County, Pennsylvania sometime in the 1950's.
It was electrified with 10 faux oil lamp fixtures with a very minimal amount of damage to the wheel's structure. 10 small holes were drilled for the lamps and 4 others for the chain. The 4 lengths of chain were hand-wrought and custom fit to the wheel. The lamp cord runs around the top rim and cannot be seen from below and has little effect on the wheel structure. Though the wheel is still in working order, it is suggested that the lamp cord be replaced for further use.
The wheel is constructed of 10 turned spokes with the top handle having rings to mark dead center. Inset into the rim near the top grip, there is a small brass button with the name of the maker, Williamson Bros. of Philadelphia. The overall condition is excellent and the wood and brass fittings are all original except as mentioned above. This is a pick up item only. Shipping could be arranged with a professional pack and ship company at the expense of the buyer. Please email us for any further details. Priced at $12,500.
